(LOT 48)
1928 W502 #6 Babe Ruth Hand-Cut SGC 6.5 EX-NM+ – POP 1!

1920s BAMBINO SCARCITY!!! One of the most eclectic 1920s baseball card sets is the 1928 W502 Hand-Cut anonymous issue whose unknown distribution continues to puzzle hobbyists. Many of these ultra-obscure cards include versos exhibiting "ONE BAGGER", "TWO BAGGER" and "HOME RUN" captions. Similar to virtually all of the other 1920s issues, the most coveted and valuable subject of the W502 set is the majestic Babe Ruth, with this SGC 6.5 EX-NM+ marvel being the sole SGC example at this lofty plateau, and a mere two SGC specimens have been graded higher! Ruth's iconic portrait image turns back the clock to an era when the Sultan of Swat changed the game forever via his unparalleled assault on ballpark fences. The near-perfectly centered illustration is situated between four bright white borders with a sharp perimeter edging highlighted by four right-angled corners. Both crease-free surfaces have avoided any glaring blemishes, and the flipside includes a "TWO BAGGER" caption. One of Ruth's scarcest cards, it was issued the year the mighty Bambino would lead the Yankees to their second consecutive world championship, with the Babe's league-leading 54 homers and sensational 1.172 OPS paving the way!
