(LOT 19)
1921 Schapira Bros. Babe Ruth "Over the Fence" Hand Cut SGC 1.5 FAIR - POP 1

EARLY '20s BABE!!! This ultra-scarce 1921 Schapira Bros. Babe Ruth "Over the Fence" SGC 1.5 offering stands as the only specimen at this plateau, with a meager 11 examples graded higher! Ironically, the "Over the Fence" title was so appropriate for one of the seven Ruth candy card subjects utilized to promote the popular Schapira candy brand. The image is strikingly similar to one of Ruth's iconic Boston Red Sox batting poses from 1919, but in this case, the NEW YORK caption has been placed across the Babe's jersey since he was now playing right field for the Yankees. The card itself reveals Ruth completing his mighty swing, bat still affixed to his lead right hand, as the Sultan of Swat watched another long ball sail towards the grandstands. A modest surface abrasion above Ruth's cap and a somewhat irregular perimeter cut account for the grade. The 1921 campaign would see the Babe launch a record 59 round-trippers, more than justifying the "OVER THE FENCE" caption that resides beneath Ruth's spikes. Note that an SGC 3 example fetched a whopping $8,666 in a Winter 2022 Memory Lane Auction, with this seldom-surfacing Sultan of Swat cardboard treat meriting a final resting place in any esteemed Bambino gathering!
