(LOT 32)
1910 E91 American Caramel "Set C" Walter Johnson PSA 6 EX-MT – "POP 3"; Highest Graded Example on the Combined PSA & SGC "Pop" Charts!

HIGHEST GRADED "BIG TRAIN"!!!... Synonymous with Walter Johnson's arguable stature as baseball's greatest all-time twirler comes along this miraculous PSA 6 1910 E91 American Caramel "Set C" candy treat that, along with two other examples, proudly stands atop BOTH the PSA and SGC census reports as the finest of its kind! The obscure E91 American Caramel sets were issued over three years (1908 Set A; 1909 Set B; 1910 Set C), with each year's set revealing 11 players from three different teams (33 total subjects). The 1910 compilation is titled Set C and included players from Pittsburgh, Washington and Boston, with the Big Train residing as the set's second most valuable player behind only the majestic Hans Wagner.

While Wagner was battling Cobb for the title of baseball's greatest player, a young Walter Johnson was in the midst of competing with the immortal Christy Mathewson as the game's premier finest pitcher. In 1910, the year this card was issued, his 25 wins, 313 league leading strikeouts and microscopic 1.36 ERA were the end result of his blazing fastball that overmatched virtually every hitter. His unique artist cartoon-like drawing portrays an imposing half-body image of the iconic Big Train, with "WASHINGTON" affixed across his period-style flannels. Bright white borders, fine centering, relatively clean surfaces, and somewhat square corners arguably consistent with a near-mint card are the highlights of this astonishing memento. Most likely preventing a higher grade is the checklist back's modest toning/soiling, with the PSA 6 assessment more than sufficient to place this "POP 1" Walter Johnson E91 treat as the best of the best on both the PSA and SGC population reports!
