1961 Roger Maris Batting Pose PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Original Associated Press Photo – Measures 7" x 9"

1961 MARIS!!!... "Fastball hit deep to right... this could be it... way back there... Holy Cow he did it... 61 for Maris... ". Such was the iconic broadcast of legendary Yankee announcer Phil "The Scooter" Rizzuto when Roger Maris blasted Red Sox hurler Tracy Stallard's fastball into Yankee Stadium's lower deck on the last game of the 1961 season to surpass Babe Ruth's hallowed 60-homer mark. While Maris had already captured an AL MVP award the prior season with New York, it was his monumental blast that forever ensured his legacy. Most baseball historians were convinced that one of baseball's unbreakable records was the Bambino's historic 60 round-trippers, achieved in the Yankee's historic 1927 season. Maris' 61-homer record would stand as the top American league figure for 61 years until Yankees right-fielder Aaron Judge eclipsed his mark by belting 62 dingers in 2022. Courtesy of Memory Lane Inc., we are proud to now offer this captivating 7" x 9" 1961 PSA Type 1 photo revealing Roger's classic batting stance and grip.

Taken on September 9, 1961, the verso's significant caption clearly states "THIS IS THE BATTING GRIP OF ROGER MARIS. THE NEW YORK YANKEE SLUGGER WHO IS MAKING A BID TO TOP SEASON HOME RUN RECORD OF 60 SET BY BABE RUTH IN 1927 – 9/9/61." The obverse side image portrays Maris in his classic Yankee pinstripes as he zones in on walloping another horsehide sphere towards the furthest confines of the stadium. Although his AL record has now been officially broken, the legacy of Roger's "61 in 61" will forever stand the test of time, with this super scare 1961 Type 1 offering effectively turning back the clock to that momentous campaign!
