(LOT 669)
1930 Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig Barnstorming Associated Press Type 1 Photo – Measures Approx. 5-1/2" x 8"- PSA Type 1 Encapsulation

The immense popularity of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig throughout the 1920's led their renowned agent Christy Walsh to organize many post-season barnstorming tours whereby these two "larger than life" legends would play in towns/cities without Major League ball clubs in order to provide deprived fans a grand opportunity to see these future Cooperstown inductees exhibit their unparalleled baseball skills. One such tour was after the 1930 campaign, with Ruth & Gehrig providing the patrons of Providence, R.I. to see their mighty slugging prowess on October 11, 1930. This memorable Rhode Island "pitstop" is captured on this remarkable 1930 Type 1 Associated Press photo that includes both the 'Sultan of Swat" and "Iron Horse", along with fellow star-struck players "Rosy" Ryan of the N.Y. Giants and Jean Dubuc of the Chicago Cubs.

Measuring approximately 5-1/2" x 8", all four players are donning their respective uniforms, with the two Yankee legends wearing their Yankees "road" attire. The sparkling central image depicts outstanding resolution and contrast, and the upper edge trim certainly does not negatively impact this extremely rare illustration. As an added exclamation point, the verso reveals a significant 10/11/30 caption that details the circumstances for this eclectic barnstorming image. Showcasing their world-class batting skills to a professional baseball starved Providence town, this offering is a resounding testament to the ultra-popularity and significance of these Ruth/Gehrig barnstorming tours that effectively "spread the word" for this incomparable dynamic duo!
