1964 Sandy Koufax - Type 1 PSA Encapsulated Los Angeles Times News Service Photo
In 1964, Brooklyn native Sanford Koufax was without equal, the greatest pitcher on the face of the earth. Coming off a 25-5 season when he struck out 306 batters to post a miniscule 1.88 ERA, Sandy became only the second pitcher in the Dodgers organization and Major League to win the Cy Young and MVP Award in the same season. In '64, he led the NL for the first of two straight seasons in winning percentage, followed by Cy Young awards in 1965 and '66, finishing second in each of those years. The offered Los Angeles Times News Service photograph presents Koufax during that 1964 season which PSA has encapsulated as a Type 1. This 7-1/2" x 10-1/4" borderless image captures the lefthander in his windup. The reverse still carries an LA Times note from photographer Larry Sharkey identifying this as from his 11th win of the season. Only six starts earlier, Koufax threw his third no-hitter. An unobtrusive crease runs horizontally through the image at his knee, but nothing can detract from Koufax's focus and intensity.
