(LOT 55)
c. 1930s Jimmie Foxx Signed and Inscribed to Fellow HOF Earle Combs - Type 1 PSA Encapsulated Original Photo

During the late-1920s, Jimmie Foxx established himself as one of the most feared hitters in the American League who was not playing for the New York Yankees. Foxx led the stacked Philadelphia A's team that featured Al Simmons, Mickey Cochrane and Lefty Grove to back-to-back World Series titles in 1929 & 1930. In New York, playing with the famed Murderers' Row, Earle Combs helped the Bronx Bombers win the 1927, 1928 & 1932 World Series. Both players put together Hall of Fame resumes, but all of the ballplayers from the era held one another in high regard with respect and adoration for their accomplishments within the lines.

This wonderful 7-1/4" x 9" Type 1 photograph of Jimmie Foxx taking batting practice exhibits some of that mutual respect with Foxx's inscription to the Yankees center fielder. Borderless and evidently hand-cut, this PSA Authentic image is inscribed "Best Wishes – To Earl Combs – a Good Fellow & Great Ball Player – Jimmie Foxx". The image remains unincumbered by any blemishes, and the black fountain inscription stands at about "7-8" strength due only to the century's worth of aging, light flaking and just poor ink distribution at the time of signing. However, this sublime offering from Hall of Famer to Hall of Famer is striking and heartwarming with their mutual respect on full display.
