(LOT 611)
1912 S81 Silks #107 Ed Walsh SGC 3 VG

BIG ED!!!... At the time this was written, only six Ed Walsh 1912 S81 #107 Silks had been encapsulated by SGC (PSA doesn't grade S81 Silks), with this SGC 3 Walsh truly residing as one of his rarest keepsakes. Owner of baseball's lowest lifetime ERA, "Big Ed" Walsh's microscopic 1.82 figure amazingly bests Matty, Johnson, Young and Alexander. Along with Jack Chesbro, he is one of only two pitchers who ever achieved 40 wins in a single season, achieving that celebrated feat in 1908 when Walsh also posted a spectacular 1.42 ERA and modern-day record 464 innings pitched. It was during that 1912 campaign that this spitball artist's Helmar Tobacco Co. S81 Silk was issued, measuring approximately 6-3/4" x 8-3/4" and revealing his iconic T3 Turkey Red image. The burley right-hander's breathtaking pitching pose reveals an extremely bold midnight blue Chicago uniform and cap. The sparkling image portrays remarkable clarity, with no obtrusive flaws evident on either side. Accounting for the assessment is some pulled threading near the upper right edge as well as light fraying along the lower perimeter. A momentous Ed Walsh offering, it stands as a grand testament to this immortal Cooperstown inductee!
