1909 W.W. Smith Postcard Honus Wagner SGC 2 Good – POP 1; Highest Graded Example on the Combined SGC & PSA Census Reports!
THE MIGHTY HONUS!!!... In conjunction with the 1909 World Series, which saw the Pittsburgh Pirates beat Cobb's Detroit Tigers in a heart-stopping seven-game contest, the W.W. Smith manufacturer issued three postcards of the immortals Honus Wagner and Ty Cobb. A separate postcard of each was produced, both titled "The Mighty Honus" and "The Mighty Cobb", as well as a third copy including both stars and titled "Two of a Kind" (also presented in this auction). Ultra rare, presented here is an SGC 2 Honus Wagner that stands as the highest graded example on the combined SGC and PSA Pop Charts! Any pre-WWI card of the iconic Honus Wagner is desirable, let alone one that stands as the only graded specimen.
Due to the legacy of his T206 "Holy Grail" card, Wagner cards have skyrocketed in value, with elite enthusiasts actively searching for Wagner's rarest cardboard artifacts. The imposing portrait sketch drawing of the 1936 HOF Charter Member is breathtaking, and beneath this sanctified image reads in small print: "Copyright 1909 by W.W. Smith", as well as the majestic caption titled "THE MIGHTY HONUS." Accurately graded, the unmarked postcard includes even corner wear, and several horizontal and diagonal creases, with the two most pronounced wrinkles running through Wagner's timeless pose and along the lower right quadrant. Bottom line is the simple right to own a copy of this significant Wagner rarity is most prevalent, with this finest graded example tantamount to the Flying Dutchman's unequivocal standing as baseball's greatest all-time shortstop!
