MOONLIGHT GRAHAM!!!... For the myriad of Hollywood baseball films that have been produced over the past century, arguably standing out the most is the 1989 blockbuster hit "Field of Dreams", based on W.P. Kinsella's 1982 novel "Shoeless Joe." Highlighted by the revered appearances of Shoeless Joe Jackson (played by Ray Liotta) and Archibald "Moonlight" Graham (played by both Burt Lancaster & Frank Whaley), it was Graham's quest to ultimately achieve an official MLB at-bat that stole the hearts of millions of Americans. This 1907 W601 Sporting Life Scranton Miners Baseball Club Composite just happens to include a rare Moonlight Graham appearance, with these approximate 13" x 14" composites printed on heavy enamel paper. Sold by the renowned Sporting Life Newspaper, many of the classic portrait poses were originally struck by iconic photographer Carl Horner.

Professionally matted and framed to the dimensions of 15-1/4" x 16-1/2", the pictured obverse side has miraculously eluded any glaring surface flaws (we cannot speak to the concealed outer perimeter and blank back). Most significantly, it includes the scarce portrait image of Graham, situated second from the left along the bottom row. It was only two years earlier that Graham would make his only MLB appearance, when the NY Giants rookie replaced George Browne in right field on June 29, 1905 at Brooklyn's Washington Park in the eighth inning. Sadly for Graham, in the top of the ninth, he would be kneeling in the on-deck circle when Claude Elliot flied out to end the inning, depriving Graham of his only chance at an official MLB plate appearance. Of course, in "Field of Dreams", Moonlight would achieve that sole at-bat in the legendary fictitious game, and this postcard effectively rekindles that momentous film event!
