(LOT 742)
1909 E101 Christy Matthewson SGC 1.5 FR

SCARCE CHRISTY!!! The E101 candy cards distributed in 1909 are similar to the E102s since both issues are considered anonymous, with their original manufacturers unidentified. Likewise, both issues are extremely condition-sensitive, with most surviving subjects revealing low grades. Presented here is one of the sets most coveted players, an eye-pleasing SGC 1.5 offering of the immortal Christy Mathewson. SGC's census report lists only 24 total encapsulated copies, a true justification for this 50-subject set's scarcity.

The 1909 campaign would see the iconic Matty lead the Senior Circuit with a microscopic 1.14 ERAs, one of the lowest figures in baseball history. The classic sideways pose seen on other early 20th century Mathewson cards portrays a brilliant array of blue, yellow and green hues. Christy's timeless image depicts sharp focus as the legendary twirler delivers another one of his baffling fadeaway pitches. Accounting for the assessment are several diminutive surface abrasions across his left chin, typical corner wear and negligible toning. As a sheer testament to this card's highly coveted stature, a PSA 2 example sold for $9,600 in November 2022, and we would highly advise any serious collector to ride this Big Six candy treat directly to the winner's circle!
