(LOT 54)
1948 Leaf #138 Larry Doby Rookie PSA 7 NM

DOBY ROOKIE!!! Larry Doby debuted for the Cleveland Indians 11 weeks after Jackie Robinson took the field for the first time with Brooklyn. But while most of Robinson's teammates welcomed their new first baseman, many of Doby's teammates turned their backs on him or refused to shake his hand when meeting him for the first time in the clubhouse at Chicago's Comiskey Park. Unlike Robinson, Doby went directly from the Negro Leagues to the big leagues, bypassing the Indians farm system.

And though he would face similar segregation, racism and bigotry throughout the length of his career, Larry Doby will forever be known as the first African American to play in AL history. He was a nine-time All-Star and led Cleveland to the 1948 World Series title. Offered is a 1948 Leaf #138 Larry Doby Rookie graded 7 NM by PSA. This colorful gem presents super sharp corners and edging, bright, bold colors, wonderful centering and clean surfaces. Only six copies are graded higher than this first edition Doby.
