(LOT 36)
1922 Neilson's Chocolate V61 #37 Babe Ruth Type 1 PSA 1 Poor

EARLY 1920s BAMBINO!!! Presented here is a PSA 1 Poor 1922 Neilson's Chocolate V61 Babe Ruth Type 1 offering with eye appeal far surpassing its rather harsh assessment. The 1922 Neilson's Chocolate V61 set is closely related to the popular 1922 American Caramel E120 series due to its ornate gray-hued designs framing an oval player image. The Type I versions include a checklist number on the front side, lower left, and an Old English ad back, versus Type II issues that exclude checklist numbers while exhibiting a standard English text. The stigma for most Neilson's Chocolate subjects is their damaged flipsides that were either affixed to the accompanying candy as well as a substantial Canadian find whereby related subjects were glued to album pages.

Both scenarios resulted in some degree of paper loss on many examples, with this particular offering eluding obtrusive paper damage. Some light horizontal wrinkles and modest staining along the verso's left edge account for the strict grade, yet most significantly, the Ruth "holding ball" image also affixed to his iconic 1922 E120 and E121 issues reveals brilliant aesthetics. Indeed, the obverse side has sidestepped any glaring blemishes, with the negligible corner wear and light creases more than forgiving. Considering low grade examples are now fetching between $10K-$15K price tags, we will let the passionate Ruth collector ultimately determine the value of this visually appealing century-old marvel that offers aesthetics far beyond its suppressed assessment!
