(LOT 190)
1955 Jackie Robinson "Out at the Plate" PSA Type 1 Encapsulated United Press Photo – Measures Approx. 7" x 9"

The iconic Jackie Robinson will forever be considered one of our National Pastime's true heroes, with this courageous ballplayer breaking the MLB color barrier in his inaugural 1947 season. For this reason alone, collectibles of this Brooklyn Dodger legend are highly coveted, such as this superb June 1, 1955 United Press photo portraying the fleet footed Jackie being tagged out at the plate by Milwaukee Braves catcher Del Crandall, with home plate umpire Dusty Boggess making the "out" call. Interestingly enough, Jackie Robinson was tagging-up from third on a pop-up to short right field, and it was Braves second baseman Hank Aaron - YES, "Hammerin' Hank" Aaron – who threw out Jackie from his second base position!

Indeed, Aaron would actually play 27 games at second base in 1955, with two of our National Pastime's greatest players engaged on this atypical play. While the result wasn't in Jackie's favor this particular afternoon, the 1955 season surely ended favorably for Robinson and the Dodgers who captured their inaugural World Championship, besting their cross-town Yankee rivals in a tightly contested seven-game Fall Classic. Measuring approximately 7" x 9", the sepia-toned image reflects minimal ill effects for a 68-year-old artifact, with its fine centering, superb contrast and white borders stealing the show. The final superlatives are the United Press credit stamp and detailed caption affixed to the verso. A marvelous keepsake from Jackie Robinson's 1955 championship season, it rekindles fond memories of how his embodiment of courage turned the baseball world upside down, forever changing baseball and America as well!
