(LOT 191)
c.1970's Roberto Clemente PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Photo – Measures Approx. 7-3/4" x 9-1/2" - PSA Type I LOA

Ironically, for all of Roberto Clemente's world-class achievements including four batting titles, 15 all-star appearances, 12 consecutive gold gloves, an NL MVP and 1971 World Series MVP award, synonymous with Lou Gehrig's legendary status, Clemente's legacy will forever be linked to his heroic death that stands as a defining testament for his immortal stature. This circa 1970s PSA Type 1 image of the immortal right fielder portrays the Hall of Famer in a stoic standing pose, donning his Pittsburgh Pirates home uniform as he leans on his mighty lumber with glove and ball tucked under his left armpit.

Most likely taken at a Spring Training facility, this breathtaking early 1970s Clemente illustration resides as one of the finest Clemente poses we have ever encountered. Measuring approximately 7-2/3" x 9-1/2", the image depicts remarkable clarity and contrast, no obtrusive surface flaws and modest trims to several of the edges. A classic representation of the immortal right-fielder, it stands as a grand testament for his courageous character that ultimately led to his untimely death on December 31, 1972, when he was tragically killed in a plane crash in an attempt to deliver assistance to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.
