(LOT 1272)
c.1931 Original 7-1/2" x 9-1/2" Wagner Studio Type 1 Philadelphia Athletics Team Photograph - PSA Encapsulated

Bolstered by heavy hitters like Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Mickey Cochrane, the 1931 Philadelphia Athletics stormed to their third consecutive American League pennant, but then fell to the St. Louis Cardinals for their bid for three straight World Series titles. Only the Ruth and Gehrig-led New York Yankees clouted more round-trippers than the A's that season, but Philadelphia produced the AL MVP as Lefty Grove went 31-4, leading the league in wins (31), ERA (2.06) and strikeouts to capture the pitching Triple Crown. He also led in complete games (27), shutouts (4) and winning percentage (.886). Their record of 107-45-1 was just that, as the 107 victories remains as a franchise record nearly a century later. Offered is an attractive original 7-1/2" x 9-1/2" Wagner Studio photograph of the American League champions. This PSA encased Type 1 image is still is good condition with little edge wear aside from light corner touches. At the bottom in white ink is "American League Champions Baseball Club of 1931" and "photo by Wagner Studio - Phila. Pa." at the bottom right corner. Also visible are random stray scratches at the upper right corner, though nothing permeates the clarity of the central team image. The back remains clean with only light development smudges from the photographer. Front Row (L-R): Unidentified, McNair, Foxx, Walberg, Batboy, coach, Boley, Todt, Unidentified
Center Row (L-R): Grove, Miller, Cochrane, Collins, Mack, Gleason, Rommel, Simmons, Bishop, Finney, Dykes
