(LOT 1271)
Pair of 1920s & '30s Original Type 1 PSA Encapsulated Photographs of Hall of Famer Chick Hafey

During the 1920s and early-30s, the St. Louis Cardinals won the 1926, '31 and '34 World Series. St. Louis' 1920s Gashouse Gang was led by Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby, Jim Bottomley, Pete Alexander, Jesse Haines and Chick Hafey. In 1926, the Redbirds upset the heavily favored and high-powered Murderers' Row of the New York Yankees that featured Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri, Herb Pennock and Waite Hoyt. Lesser known HOFer Chick Hafey was a National League slugger who led the NL in slugging percentage in 1927 and batting in 1931. Over 13 years in the Majors with the Cardinals (1924-31) and the Cincinnati Reds (1932-35, '37), Hafey clouted 164 home runs and posted a .971 fielding percentage in the outfield. Offered here are a pair of 1920s & '30s PSA Encapsulated Type 1 photographs of Hall of Fame outfielder, Chick Hafey. Included is a Pacific & Atlantic 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" news service photograph with Hafey poised and ready for battle leaning against his bat. The photo remains in excellent condition with minimal visible surface abrasions, none of which obstruct the central image and the back shows little to no wear with pencil notations "Chick Hafey - St. Louis Cards." The second 8" x 10" Underwood & Underwood Type 1 photo shows the slugger at bat in his follow-thru. The beautiful image is clean with only light unobtrusive scratches that do not detract from the batter. The edges and corners show light handling wear and the reverse holds the standard U & U stamping with "Outfielder Chick - Hafey - St. Louis Cardinals 1930" written in black ink.
