(LOT 1269)
1930 Original 6" x 8" Acme Newspictures Dizzy Dean Type 1 News Service Photograph - PSA Encapsulated

By the time Dizzy Dean broke into organized baseball with the St. Louis cardinals organization, he already possessed the power, control and skills of a grizzled veteran. The happy-go-lucky Arkansas farm boy went 25-10 in his first minor league season (1930), earning a September call-up, and then posted 26-10 record in 1931 with the Houston Buffaloes. That was all Cardinals GM Branch Rickey needed to see before adding him to St. Louis' permanent rotation. Over his 12-year big league career, Dizzy Dean went 150-83 with a 3.02 ERA and led the National League in strikeouts four times. In 1934, Diz famously predicted, "Me an' Paul (his brother) are gonna win 45 games" and they did just that posting 49 victories - Dizzy (30) & Daffy (19). That season he won the NL MVP award. Presented here is a striking original Type 1 Acme Newspictures photograph of the 20-year-old Dean in follow-thru in his rookie year. This stunning 6" x 8" PSA encapsulated photo is still in exceptional condition with slight overexposure at development around the snow-white borders adding to the allure of this piece. Limited expected aging is visible and only a couple abrasions are evident, though nothing infringes on this rookie-era photograph of one of baseball's greatest hurlers. The back displays two "ACME Newspictures" stamps, one dated "Oct - 2 1930", and the pencil notation "Jerome Herman Dean - rookie pitcher, Cardinals" at the top. The PSA sticker is also affixed to the bottom right corner.
