(LOT 1264)
1928 St. Louis Cardinals Pitchers 6" x 8" Type 1 Original International Newsreel Photo - PSA Encapsulated

Having already anchored a pitching staff that won the 1926 over the hard hitting and heavily favored New York Yankees, soon-to-be Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander was in the twilight of his career with 364 wins, while fellow HOFer Jesse Haines was in his prime at the start of the 1928 season. At the top of the St. Louis Cardinals pitching staff in 1928, the two future HOFers would combine for a 36-16 record, while Bill Sherdel led the Redbirds going 21-10. But in 1928, after the Cards won their second National League pennant in three years, they once again faced the mighty Murderers' Row, this time with a much different outcome as the Yankees swept St. Louis in four games. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig combined for seven home runs in that four-game sweep. Offered here is an original 1928 International Newsreel photograph of the Cardinals pitching staff with Grover Cleveland Alexander front and center and Jesse Haines standing top right. This 6" x 8" Type 1 photo of the beleaguered rotation is encased Authentic by PSA and displays minimal signs of wear. Light touches at the corners are apparent and the tiniest bit of paper loss at bottom center are the only flaws with no surfaces flaws visible.
