(LOT 1265)
1928 Carl Hubbell Rookie Era 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" Type 1 Original Charles Conlon Photo - PSA Encapsulated

Tossing around the word "legend" is commonplace in our hobby, and this is one more instance that fits the bill. In the 1920s, there emerged two "legends" that redefined their positions with Carl Hubbell taking the mound for the New York Giants and Charles Conlon taking his place behind a camera, capturing some of the most renowned images in baseball history. Carl Hubbell won 10 or more games, including five consecutive 20-game seasons (1933-37), for 15 straight years in the Majors. He was a nine-time NL All-Star and won two NL MVP Awards and the 1933 World Series. Charles Conlon, on the other hand, photographed not only some of the game's most memorable moments, but also the essence of players in portraits, at bat, in the field or at ease with teammates.

Conlon was one of the first on-field sports photographers, documenting the game so fans could see their favorite players at work. His photograph of Ty Cobb sliding into third under the tag of Jimmy Austin is one of the most recognizable in sports history. Offered is a remarkable 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" Charles Conlon Type 1 original photograph of Hall of Famer Carl Hubbell in his rookie year. This borderless Conlon photo shows the NY Giants' youthful right hander upon delivery and has been encased Authentic by PSA. With minimal surface abrasions, this nearly century-old image of Hubbell displays light creasing at the upper left corner with slight rounding at the other three. However, there is nothing to obstruct this rookie shot of Carl Hubbell set to embark on an historic career worthy of the Hall of Fame. The reverse features "The Cleveland News" stamp and dated "Oct 1-1928" with "Carl Hubbell (Giants)" written in red pencil in Conlon's own hand. And though Charles Conlon has yet to be enshrined in Cooperstown, his photographs adorn the Hall's walls and are each deserving of a spot in the greatest and most "legendary" sports photography collections in the hobby!
