(LOT 1246)
c.1919-20 Charles Conlon 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" Original Frank "Home Run" Baker Type 1 Photograph - PSA Encapsulated

Offered here is a duo of legendary baseball icons with this striking 1920s original Charles Conlon 6" x 8" photograph of the great Frank "Home Run" Baker. In 1916, after Baker led the Philadelphia A's to three World Series titles (1910, '11 & '13), the New York Yankees purchased Baker's contract, installing him at third base for the final six seasons (1916-19, 1921-22) of his career. Charles Conlon was the foremost sports photographers covering the New York Yankees during the 1920s and '30s. Often positioned outside the lines on the third base side, Charles Conlon expertly documented baseball in pictures that are considered some of the finest in sports history. Conlon's photograph of Ty Cobb sliding into third under the tag of Jimmy Austin is one of the most recognizable in sports.

Offered is a 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" original Type 1 photograph of Baker soft tossing before a game in the early 1920s. With so many original photos of the famed slugger holding his bat, this beautiful example shows the Yankees third baseman preparing for battle. This sepia-toned image of "Home Run" Baker remains in delightful condition with little to no signs of wear and no obstructive abrasions to detract from this Conlon shot. Once again, Conlon not only caught the player at work, but also captured the stern expression that so often characterized Baker. Borders and edges still appear clean with only slight touches at the bottom left corner. The reverse presents lightly toned due to 100 years of aging with only the lightest of creases visible at bottom center. The standard "Charles M. Conlon - Evening Telegram - New York" designation is stamped at center and a PSA/DNA Authentic sticker rests at bottom right. This outstanding photo of one of the greatest sluggers of the Deadball Era is a beautiful example of the keen eye that Charles Conlon possessed, showing much more than just a ballplayer warming up, but presenting an absolute legend at work.
