(LOT 71)
1909-'11 T206 Ty Cobb – Green Portrait – Sweet Caporal 350 Subjects/Factory 30 PSA 5 EX

One of our hobby's most illustrious cards continues to be Ty Cobb's regal T206 "Green Portrait" subject, with this highly coveted keepsake on virtually every vintage enthusiast's want lists. Indeed, the hallowed green portrait Cobb is realizing record prices with each and every sale, justified by a PSA NM-MT 8 example achieving a staggering $435,000 price tag in December 2020! Safe to say, the incredible legacy for the T206 Green Portrait Cobb's strengthens each and every day, with the collecting community exhibiting an unquenchable desire to capture the most formidable examples in any grade. Of the four hallowed T206 Cobb issues, the most treasured subject has always been the Ty Cobb Green Portrait pose portraying Carl Horner's seemingly timeless Cobb image. Presented here just happens to be one of the most spectacular mid-grade T206 Green Cobb's you will ever come across, an absolutely breathtaking PSA EX 5 example that easily presents itself in "EX-MT" fashion, spearheaded by its virtually perfect centering on both the obverse and back sides.

Cobb's playing brilliance has earned him the most prestigious hobby accolades, and it was no surprise when the Baseball Writers of America chose him as one of our National Pastime's five original 1936 Hall of Fame charter members. Of Cobb's 12 batting championships, nine were won in consecutive fashion (1907-1915), with his .366 lifetime average still "head and shoulders" above its closest competitor (Hornsby's .358). Cobb easily ranks as one of baseball's all-time players, justifying why his renowned baseball card issues are aggressively pursued by advanced collectors, with none more popular than an awe-inspiring T206 Green Portrait subject. Synonymous with his remarkable playing prowess is the utter "brilliance" associated with this EX 5 marvel that portrays a splendid Carl Horner portrait pose of the fiery batting champion. As previously stated, and in atypical fashion, the iconic Cobb image reveals near-perfect centering and a rich green background encompassed by four relatively clean borders (slight negligible toning). Additional highlights include striking pink hues on Cobb's cheeks, no glaring surface blemishes and a likewise well-centered Sweet Caporal 350 Subjects/Factory 30 verso.

We can only assume that the modest/even corner wear (actually providing a super eye pleasing result) prevented a higher assessment, yet as most can clearly see, this card arguably merited "at least" a half-grade bump. Literally speaking, the legendary image seems to transcend time back to a bygone era when the "Georgia Peach" ruled America's Pastime in a manner that mesmerized his overmatched peers. Proudly standing tall as one of the finest mid-grade Green Portrait Cobb's on the planet, it will certainly provide its future owner with superior bragging rights with its spellbinding visual appeal. We can only speculate as to the limits of its soaring value, and we surely know how the card market has literally "exploded" over the past six months with regard to its meteoric pricing surges for the hobby's foremost issues. Considering its unbridled stature and likewise "spine-tingling" eye appeal, this quintessential Tyrus heirloom offers the sophisticated collector a golden opportunity to capture a premier aesthetically pleasing example for less than six-figures!
