(LOT 646)
1967 Mickey Mantle Type 1 Batting Photo – United Press International - Measures Approx. 7" x 9" – PSA Type I Encapsulation

Little did people realize that in 1951, the ultra-powerful powerful rookie from Oklahoma named Mickey Charles Mantle would be embarking on one of the most iconic careers in our National Pastime's glorious history. Luckily for hobbyists, there are hundreds of Mantle cards to choose from, more than accommodating the collecting community for an opportunity to own a popular baseball card of this Yankee icon. Unfortunately for advanced photo enthusiasts, the prospect of capturing one of his original batting images resides as a fractional opportunity versus the seemingly countless number of available baseball cards that flood the hobby.

Offered here just happens to be one of the most imposing Mantle batting photos extant, a magnificent 1967 image with the "Commerce Comet" completing his mighty left-handed swing that produced a game-winning "walk-off" 3-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning against the California Angels on April 29, 1967. Measuring approximately 7" x 9", "The Mick" is donning his classic pinstripe Yankee uniform, obviously finishing his colossal swing from Yankee Stadium's left-handed batter's box as he watches his mammoth blast sail towards the furthest confines of the cathedral-like stadium.

Less than a month later, "Mick" would belt his 500th career round-tripper, at the time joining Ruth, Foxx, Ott and Mays as the only five sluggers who achieved this ultra-significant milestone. Presenting itself in outstanding condition, the pristine-like black & white left-handed batting pose exhibits brilliant clarity and a somewhat darker contrast, and other than a few negligible stray red notations on the upper and lower right borders, we cannot detect any alarming surface blemishes. The verso reveals the critical April 30, 1967 caption detailing the events of Mickey's game winning 3-run clout that stands as another one of his seemingly infinite triumphant moments that captivated a Nation for 18 remarkable seasons!
