(LOT 647)
c.1920's Lou Gehrig Partakes in a Youth Sandlot Game - Measures Approx. 8" x 10" - PSA Type 1 Encapsulation

Babe Ruth wasn't the only superstar ballplayer who loved America's aspiring young ballplayers! This magnificent Lou Gehrig photo vividly depicts the hallowed "Iron Horse" partaking in a teenager's sandlot baseball game as he dons a sleeveless tee shirt while holding a colossal-size bat in his right hand. It appears that Gehrig is trying to listen on the pitcher/catcher conversation with a captivated group of boys looking on. Taken in the later 1920's, the back caption provides the following information: "LARRUPIN LOU" LISTENS IN ON THE RIVAL BATTERY – The young Prince of Swat frequently plays with the sandlot kids when the Yankees have a day of rest.

The kids love to strike him out – when possible - and they frame all kinds of fancy signals to make him bite". Obviously, the reference to "Larrupin Lou" places this awe-inspiring photo in the 1927-1929 period, since the "Bustin Babes/Larrupin Lou" Barnstorming Tour commenced in the 1927 off-season. The illustration itself reveals crystal-clear clarity and no obtrusive flaws, with the sensational central image not impeded whatsoever by an upper left corner chip and some negligible soiling on a few of the borders. An extremely obscure "Iron Horse" offering, it reminds us that synonymous with the "Babe", Gehrig likewise adored children, justified by moments like this when he would take the time to join their local "pick-up" games as an overwhelming benevolent gesture!
