(LOT 87)
1909 T206 Christy Mathewson "Dark Cap" – Piedmont 350 Subjects/Factory 25 (PSA NM/MT 8) - "1 of 3" Piedmonts; Only 1 PSA Listed Piedmont Graded Higher!"

This magnificent PSA NM/MT 8 T206 Mathewson "Black Cap" Piedmont 350 Subjects gem has been joined by only a single other "Piedmont" example at this hallowed plateau with a SOLE PSA listed Piedmont example graded higher! Mathewson's iconic status in baseball history cannot be overemphasized, with Christy unquestionably regarded as one of the greatest pitchers to ever toe a pitching rubber. "Big Six" tallied an amazing 373 lifetime victories, 2.13 lifetime E.R.A., and accumulated four 30- win seasons. However, synonymous with Babe Ruth's legendary stature, he was the "true" hero for thousands of aspiring young ballplayers during the "dead-ball" era with his matinee-like looks and godly persona supporting his unparalleled mystique. His 3 shutouts in the 1905 World Series against Connie Mack's mighty A's is a record that will never be approached and it came as little surprise when the baseball writers selected him as one of the five 1936 Hall of Fame charter members.

It therefore came as little surprise when Connie Mack so emphatically stated: "Christy Mathewson is the greatest pitcher I have ever seen. It was wonderful to watch him pitch when he wasn't pitching against you!" Regarding the world-class attributes of this exalted cardboard heirloom, Matty's iconic "hands at chest" Carl Horner image, that arguably resides as the most legendary pose of the immortal right-hander twirler, exhibits an array of spine-tingling hues. Standing tall w/hands at chest, Matty surely looks as though he is the "lord" of all dead-ball era hurlers, and his crystal-clear pose and flawless-like rich sky blue/green grass setting are extremely well-centered between four absolutely blinding white borders. Super clean surfaces, blistering sharp corner tips and a bold midnight blue Piedmont ad back complete this truly sensational offering that tantamount with Mathewson's superior pitching prowess, suffices as one of the finest Mathewson "Black Cap" examples extant!
