(LOT 14)
1909 E90-1 American Caramel Ty Cobb PSA 5 EX

RARE COBB!!! At the turn of the century, Philadelphia was considered by many to be America's most powerful city. With staggering wealth, unmatched manufacturing resources and a population filled with master craftsmen in virtually every trade The City of Brotherly Love prided itself at being the best at whatever it chose to do. This sense of leadership helped inspire Philadelphia's own American Caramel Company to issue several of the greatest caramel card issues of all time. Beginning in 1909, the American Carmel Company produced its first of many sets, the E90-1. Originally inserted in packages of Baseball Caramels, these colorful 1 " x 2 " cardboard classics were issued with sticks of caramel candy to East Coast youngsters. These tiny color lithos featured color illustrations (often crude in their detail) depicting many of baseball's most popular photos of the day.

While E90-1 card backs incorporated 100 subjects in the set, 120 actual variations are known. And while several cards are more rare than the E90-1 of Ty Cobb, perhaps no card in the set is more desired. This relic from baseball's formative years provides the advanced collector with a rare opportunity to obtain a seldom seen higher grade example of baseball's most feared baserunner and unquestioned batting champion. Masterfully designed, this E90-1 Cobb shows a late afternoon sky meeting a pastoral green outfield behind the mighty Tiger outfielder, in colors as vivid and bold as the day they were printed. Well over one hundred years old, the card's borders shine boldly with great eye appeal. Ty Cobb created the standard by which all hitters will forever be judged. A member of the elite Hall of Fame, this Cobb card would enhance any high end collection.
