(LOT 87)
1928 Lou Gehrig PSA Type I Original Wide World Photos – Measures Approx. 6" x 8-1/4" – Full PSA Type I LOA

Presented here is an extraordinary Lou Gehrig 6" x 8-1/4" Wide World Photo that stands as one of the most stoic facial images of the "Iron Horse" extant. It is no secret that the immortal Gehrig was the ultimate embodiment of courage, leaving an indelible mark on the game itself that will unquestionably stand the test of time. This is why a seemingly infinite number of collectors actively pursue his exalted artifacts, with this classic Gehrig "portrait/bust" offering depicting an extremely "intense" facial expression from the iconic first baseman. Taken right before the commencement of the 1928 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals (the caption is dated 10/1/28), Gehrig's revered portrait pose portrays crystal clear clarity and the finest possible contrast as he dons his classic Yankee pinstripes.

We cannot detect any obtrusive surface flaws with the only blemish worthy of mention being the absence of a left border. The verso reveals the critical WIDE WORLD PHOTOS credit stamp as well as a caption that reads as follows: "MEMBER OF 1928 AMERICAN LEAGUE PENNANT WINNERS – NEW YORK – LOU GEHRIG, SLUGGING 1st BASEMAN OF THE NEW YORK YANKEES, WHO MEET THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS IN THE WORLD SERIES – 10/1/28." As an aftermath to this revered image, led by Gehrig's four World Series round trippers, the Yankees would go on to best the Cardinals in four straight games, capturing their second consecutive championship via a four-game sweep!

Gehrig's legacy is best defined by the fact that he was the quiet hero, simply going about his business without a mere "blip", such to the point that the mention of his name inspires a still tranquility amongst his vast following. That said, we cannot imagine as finer testament to Gehrig's unparalleled legacy than this world-class illustration that portrays a magnificent enduring expression of the hallowed "Iron Horse"! - Full PSA/DNA Type I LOA
