1909 E92 Croft's Candy Blue Ty Cobb SGC Authentic – One of Only a Few Known Blue Back Croft's Candy Examples!

RARE BLUE CROFTS COBB!!! One of Ty Cobb's rarest cards is presented here in an SGC AUTHENTIC holder, the ultra-elusive 1909 E92 Croft's Candy leaning-on-bat subject revealing a near-impossible to find Blue Croft's Candy ad back. In 1909, the Philadelphia based Croft & Allen Co. inserted baseball cards into their popular candy brand packages as a promotional tool to enhance sales. Similar to other renowned candy companies (e.g., Dockman & Sons, Nadja Caramels and Croft's Cocoa), lithographic images of popular players were affixed to the front, with the manufacturer's advertisement listed on the flipside. Croft's Candy issued 50 different players with three different colored advertisement backs, including black, blue and red. The most common of these are the black backs, with the red backs virtually impossible to find (to the best of our knowledge, there are no documented Cobb and Wagner red backs). The Blue ad backs are likewise obscure, with this immensely scarce offering one of only 11 total SGC encapsulated Croft's Candy Cobb subjects. The SGC census report only identifies two specific Blue advertisements (including this offering), and we can only assume that virtually all of the remaining nine unidentified colored backs most likely exhibit the more common Black verso. This offering has obviously seen better days via its heavy creases/tears, surface abrasions, edge chipping, severely rounded corners, and two clear strips of tape on the verso utilized to secure the blatant surface damage. However, the simple right to own a copy takes center stage, with another Blue Back Authentic example fetching a lofty $31K in January 2024.
