(LOT 218)
c.1890s 3 Strikes Cut Plug Tobacco Tin

This amazing "3 Strikes" Granulated Cut Plug tobacco tin has survived for more than a century and features a classic baseball batter image on each side. Likely originating in Canada, based on the "American Bank Note Co. Ottawa" stamp and the compliance agreement printed on the bottom. "The following caution is to be strictly observed under penalties provided by the statutes of Canada:..." Still hosting strong colors of deep, rich red, gold and yellow backgrounds, this 1890s tobacco tin, measuring 4-1/2" x 3" x 7/8", remains in remarkable condition even despite the moderate scattered oxidation and rusting evident overall. Remnants of the original tobacco stamp remain on both the body and lid of the tin. Tobacco tin collecting is a unique niche in the sports collectibles industry, though no less relevant, and this example is extraordinary given that it has endured for more than 130 years.
