(LOT 12)
1909-11 T206 Ty Cobb Red Portrait Piedmont 350 Subjects/25 PSA 6 EX-MT

BRILLIANT RED PORTRAIT TY!!! By 1910, the immortal Tyrus Raymond Cobb's lightning-fast bat was beginning to steal some of the thunder from Pittsburgh's great Honus Wagner. The legendary Georgia Peach would claim his fourth consecutive batting title in 1910, posting a sensational .382 mark while also pacing the Junior Circuit with a likewise impressive 1.004 OPS. Cobb's revered name was now widespread amongst baseball enthusiasts, as he was about to surpass the Flying Dutchman as our National Pastime's foremost player. In that same 1910 campaign, the American Tobacco Company would issue Cobb's 350 Subjects T206 cards, with this Piedmont 350/Factory 25 Red Portrait PSA 6 marvel being one of only four Piedmont 350 examples listed on the PSA population report, bested by a mere eight specimens.

Hobbyists are well aware of the renowned stature of any T206 Ty Cobb portrait keepsake, with Carl Horner's classic portrait portrayal of the fiery Cobb one of our illustrious hobby's cornerstone images. This particular offering reveals an extremely well-centered pose of the Tiger's superstar, set against an extremely bold red background that has miraculously eluded any notable surface damage. Atypically near-perfect centering, somewhat square corners and robust facial hues are additional world-class highlights justifying the grade. Preventing a higher assessment is some spotted soiling along the upper left borders as well as some negligible toning on the verso. An imposing T206 tobacco treat, it conjures up memories of how the exalted Cobb wore out pitchers to the tune of a record-setting .366 lifetime batting average!
