1962 Topps #36 Ernie Davis Rookie PSA 8 NM-MT
TRAGIC ROOKIE!!! At Syracuse, Ernie Davis scored three more touchdowns and posted 567 more yards from scrimmage than the great Jim Brown, whom he superseded in the Orangemen backfield. Drafted #1 overall in the 1961 NFL Draft and Davis' immediate trade to the Cleveland Browns is cause for all football historians to wonder what could have been. If not for his untimely death at 23, the Browns' backfield could have been the most dominant in NFL history, more so than it already was with Jim Brown alone. Offered here is a 1962 Topps #36 Ernie Davis rookie card graded 8 NM-MT by PSA. Sadly, this is the closest Ernie came to being an NFL player as he passed away from leukemia prior to ever playing a single down in the league. This eye catching and condition-sensitive Rookie of the College Football HOFer shows virtually no signs of wear or flaws and aside from only the slightest of favoritism toward the upper left centering, we are left to wonder why not a 9? Only two graded higher.
