This T205 Gold Border Walter Johnson PSA 4.5 Sweet Caporal offering merits its solid mid-grade assessment by eluding any major gold border chipping that typically plagues most T205 examples. A majority of historians nominate Johnson as baseball's greatest all-time pitcher. From a statistical perspective, Johnson's achievements have rightfully earned him that title, including a modern-day record of 417 victories, three Pitching Triple Crowns (1913, 1918, 1924), five ERA titles, six times leading the league in victories and an unbelievable 12 strikeout titles! At the end of his amazing career, he amassed 3,508 strikeouts, posted a microscopic 2.17 lifetime ERA, and incredibly, tossed 110 shutouts (including 38 "1-0" victories). Due to their extremely condition-sensitive gold borders that were subjected to significant flaking and wear, finding ANY T205 specimen with a majority of their original hued borders is an excruciating task, let alone one representing the finest pitcher who ever toed a rubber. Although the classic portrait image does somewhat favor the left edge, it is the relatively clean gold borders, only revealing some wear at the corner tips, that steal the show for this Big Train masterpiece!
