(LOT 91)
1909 Dockman & Sons E92 Christy Mathewson PSA 6 EX-MT

RARE PSA 6 MATTY!!! Seldom surfacing in the hobby are high-grade early 20th century candy "E" cards, with any of the 1909 E92 John Dockman & Sons subjects one of those extremely condition sensitive issues. One of this renowned set's most renowned players is the immortal Christy Mathewson, and it is indeed our pleasure to offer his scarce for the grade PSA 6 EX-MT E92 Dockman & Sons marvel. Joining a mere three other examples at this lofty tier, it has only been bested by two specimens, truly residing as one of the foremost E92s extant! Similar to this grand offering's superior stature is the stature of the iconic Christian Gentleman who toed the rubber for 17 years with John McGraw's NY Giants. The nearly unhittable hurler would tally 25 wins the year this remarkable PSA 6 gem was issued, posting an unfathomable 1.14 league-leading ERA that ranks as the fourth lowest modern day (post-1900s) figure for a starting pitcher (only trailing Dutch Leonard, Mordecai Brown and Bob Gibson).

Matty dominated the turn of the century decade like no other pitcher, eventually accumulating an amazing 373 wins and microscopic 2.13 lifetime ERA. We cannot imagine a more fitting testament to his immortality than this high-grade anomaly that like Matty's unparalleled pitching prowess, sits near the top of the Pop Chart. The super popular sideways pose seen on other early 20th century Mathewson cards (e.g., E101, E102, E106, etc.) presents itself in brilliant fashion, highlighted by the ultra-sparkling array of blue, yellow and green background hues. Christy's timeless pitching image portrays vivid clarity and fine contrast as the majestic right-hander is possibly unleashing another one of his classic fade-away pitches. Atypical for this issue, the image reveals near-perfect centering between four relatively clean borders, and no obtrusive surface flaws are evident on either side. Minimal corner wear is consistent with the graded, and the "JOHN H. DOCKMAN & SONS - 50 BASE BALL PLAYER" ad back is completely intact. Indeed folks, all the eye-pleasing attributes of this virtually pack-fresh Big-Six type card speak for itself, with its irrefutable paucity level consistent with Matty's king of the hill standing!
