1988 N162 Goodwin Champions Mike "King" Kelly SGC 4 VG-EX

KING KELLY!!! One of the 19th century's most coveted subjects is the 1888 Goodwin Champions N162 Mike "King" Kelly, presented here in an SGC 4 holder. Hall of Famer Mike "King" Kelly is one of the most desirable 19th century Hall of Famers for avid enthusiasts. Owner of a .308 lifetime batting average, Kelly was one of the first catchers to give the pitcher finger signals and is credited by many for perfecting the hit-and-run. Players and fans adored him as he lived his life in the fast lane, may have been baseball's best-dressed player, and on several occasions appeared on stage to recite the famous "Casey at the Bat". Coincidently, this 1888 N162 Goodwin Champion offering is likewise a momentous hit, with Kelly's well-centered lithographic portrait pose, including his thick mustache, portraying sparkling hues. While no obtrusive flaws are evident on the obverse side, scattered soiling on both the borders and verso as well as even corner wear prevent a higher assessment. Considering this card celebrated its 135th birthday in 2023, its sheer existence, eye-pleasing qualities, and classic Kelly illustration place it as one of the 19th century's highly coveted cardboard treasures!
