(LOT 306)
1957 PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Associated Press Photo w/Campanella, Stengel, Durocher, Haney & Ethel Barrymore - Measures Approx. 7" x 9" – Includes PSA LOA

MANAGERIAL GREATS!!!... This 1957 PSA Type 1 Photo includes four prestigious baseball figures including Roy Campanella, Casey Stengel, Leo Durocher and Fred Haney; all posing with Hollywood superstar Ethel Barrymore. Taken in Los Angeles, CA, this Associated Press image would be issued on November 23, 1957, only a few months before Hall of Famer Campanella's tragic car accident in January 1958 that left the legendary catcher stricken in a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. This particular photo represents a tribute to the legendary Ethel Barrymore who was a stage, screen and radio star spanning six decades, with this iconic actress widely regarded as "The First Lady of the American Theatre". Then 78 years old, Barrymore would pass away only two years later on June 15, 1959, with her Hollywood career forever belonging to the ages.

Regarding Stengel, Durocher and Haney, these master minds would all lead their respective teams to a host of world championships. Leo Durocher won four titles (two as a player, the 1954 Fall Classic as Giants manager & '63 championship as Dodgers coach); Fred Haney guided the Milwaukee Braves to their inaugural title when he bested the Yankees in the 1957 World Series; and Stengel won a whopping nine championships (two as an outfielder with the N.Y. Giants in 1921-22, and seven as Yankees manager including a record five consecutive championships from 1949-1953). Measuring 7" x 9", the image reveals the finest possible clarity and contrast, with all of the respective stars literally jumping off the illustration. Other than a few faint wrinkles, no glaring flaws are evident, and the verso includes the significant Associated Press caption (with the verbiage reading backwards). Eclectic to say the least, its world class aesthetics and array of American legends place it as a must have for any distinguished photo collector!
