Babe Ruth & Ty Cobb Signed 1924 World Series Polo Grounds Unscored Program – PSA 8.5 TOTAL AUTO GRADE (9 MINT Ruth; 8 NM-MMT Cobb)
SIGNED RUTH & COBB!!!... The 1924 campaign would see the Washington Senators face off against the New York Giants in the World Series. This would be the Senators inaugural Fall Classic, and they would electrify the D.C. fan base by capturing their one and only World Championship in a tightly played seven-game contest. Led by the immortal Walter Johnson, the Senators would win Game #7 in 12 innings, with the Big Train tallying his sole World Series win by twirling the final four shutout innings in relief. Games three, four and five would be played at the Polo Grounds, and in the stands for one of those games were the immortal Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb who were in attendance for a Christy Walsh promotional effort.
That said, this 1924 World Series Polo Grounds program has been boldly signed by both Ruth and Cobb on the front cover in black fountain pen. More significantly, PSA has assigned the timeless "Babe Ruth" script a "9 MINT" assessment, with the "Ty Cobb" signature reflecting a PSA 8 NM-MT grade. The accompanying PSA LOA includes these separate grades as well as a combined "8.5 NM-MT+" assessment, a remarkable achievement for two autographs recently celebrating their 99th birthday! Even more impressive is the fact that it is an excruciating chore to find both of these iconic scripts on the same artifact, substantiating why this exalted memento merits Cooperstown stature.
The most esteemed autograph collectors are well aware that Ruth and Cobb signed collectibles are extremely rare, so the actual opportunity to capture both legendary scripts on an original World Series program resides as a momentous prospect. The program itself reveals EX+ aesthetics with only a negligible diagonal wrinkle in the lower right quadrant, and an extremely light pencil notation on the back cover's lower right edge the only notable flaws. The spine is completely intact, even corner wear is somewhat eye pleasing, and the interior pages including unmarked New York/Washington scorecards reflect no obtrusive flaws.
Of course, the revered Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb signatures steal the show, with Ruth's script situated directly above "1924" and Cobb's diagonal signature situated near Stanley Harris' upper right oval. By 1924, the Sultan of Swat was baseball's new home run king and its most formidable player, having clouted an AL leading 46 round-trippers and posting a sensational 1.251 OPS. Meanwhile, the Georgia Peach's .338 average would be the 19th consecutive season the fiery Cobb would best the .300+ mark, an unfathomable accomplishment. The concept of owning both a Ruth and Cobb autograph on a classic 1924 World Series program boggles the mind, with this unique offering conjuring up vivid memories of their unparalleled diamond exploits! - PSA 8.5 NM-MT+ AUTO LOA & JSA LOA
