(LOT 108)
1950 Lakers Scott's George Mikan PSA EX 5 (MK) – "Pop 3"; Only 2 PSA Examples Graded Higher (Qualifiers Notwithstanding)

RARE MIKAN!!! One of the scarcest of all basketball issues is the extremely eclectic 1950 Lakers Scott's 14-card set distributed by the Minneapolis based Scott's Potato Chips company. Of course, the most coveted and valuable subject of this seldom surfacing issue is the iconic Hall of Fame center George Mikan who by 1950, had already established himself as the NBA's finest player via his spectacular 28.3 and 27.4 league-leading points per game figures in his first two seasons! This superb PSA 5 EX (MK) 1950 Lakers Scott's George Mikan offering stands as one of only three PSA 5s, with only two examples graded higher, qualifiers notwithstanding. Furthermore, it resides as one of only 16 PSA encapsulated copies, substantiating its immense paucity level in any grade. Similar to Babe Ruth's stature as a baseball icon, professional basketball's true Hall of Fame pioneer is none other than the immortal George Mikan, for no other player contributed a more significant marketable role to basketball's ultimate development than this magnificent center.

Mikan scored 11,764 career points, an average of 22.6 per game, retired as the all-time leading scorer, averaged 13.4 rebounds and compiled 2.8 assists in 520 NBL, BAA and NBA games. Adding to his impeccable resume was seven BAA and NBA championships, an All-Star MVP trophy, three scoring titles and being member of the first four NBA All-Stars and the first six All-BAA and All-NBA Teams. For all these reasons, he was voted the greatest player of the first half of the century by The Associated Press, and was selected as one of the NBA 50 Greatest Players in 1996. This ultra-obscure PSA 5 offering reveals stellar aesthetics, highlighted by Mikan's classic cartoon line drawing set against a fine powder blue background. Some modest surface and corner wear account for the PSA assessment, with the "MK" qualifier due to a negligible light red notation situated directly above the verso's lower edge.

The final superlative of the Lakers Scott's cards is the flipside's neat player bio and prize redemption process, with the 6'10" Mikan the key card from this scarce regional issue. Its significant value is justified by a PSA 3.5 example fetching $17K in a public auction roughly a year earlier, further justification of why this Mikan rarity stands alongside his exalted 1948 Bowman rookie as one of his two most renowned cardboard issues!
