(LOT 1267)
c.1930 Al Simmons PSA Type 1 Encapsulated Underwood & Underwood Photo - Measures Approx. 6-1/2" x 8-1/2"

Hall of Famer Al "Bucketfoot" Simmons is, undoubtedly, one of the most underrated hitters in baseball history. His nickname was given to him due to his odd batting stance, pointing his left foot towards 3rd base and synonymous with the "don't step in the bucket" hitting philosophy. Well, in Simmons case it worked because he compiled 2,927 hits to the tune of a .334 lifetime batting average. He also knocked in over 1,800 runs including 11 consecutive seasons of 100+ RBIs, four times he topped the .380 mark (including two seasons over .390), and still holds the Major League record for most single season hits by a right-handed batter when he stoked 253 hits in 1925. Locating original photos of this powerful slugger is an excruciating task, substantiating why this ultra-rare PSA Type 1 batting pose of the legendary Al Simmons is a "must have" for any Hall of Fame gathering.

Simmons is showcasing his classic Athletics uniform as he completes his mighty swing, with this 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" offering retaining a majority of its original breathtaking aesthetics. Highlights include impeccable registration, near-perfect contrast, and a well-centered image, with the only noteworthy blemish being a diminutive upper left corner chip. The verso reveals the critical Underwood & Underwood credit stamp as well as some stray pencil notations. Taken in the 1930 era, that campaign would see Simmons lead the Junior Circuit with a robust .381 batting average, with "Bucketfoot" also walloping 36 round-trippers and knocking in a staggering 165 runs. This obscure Simmons original photo serves as a sheer reminder of how this mighty slugger teamed up with the great Jimmie Foxx in the "City of Brotherly Love" to form one of baseball's greatest all-time slugging tandems!
