Pop Quiz: Who are the only six professional athletes to be drafted in three major sports? The answer is George Carter, Jo Jo White, Mickey McCarty, Noel Jenke, Dave Logan and David Mark Winfield. While Jo Jo White enjoyed a superb NBA career, the most formidable member of that elite club is baseball Hall of Famer Dave Winfield who was drafted by the San Diego Padres as the fourth overall pick of the 1973 MLB Amateur draft. Winfield was also selected by the NBA's Atlanta Hawks in the fifth round, the ABA's Utah Stars in the fourth round and the Minnesota Vikings in the 17th round. The hard-hitting outfielder with a cannon-like throwing ultimately chose to pursue a baseball career that would lead to a spectacular 22-year HOF career justified by his elite accomplishments including 3,110 hits, 465 homers and 1,833 runs batted in.

He played for six MLB teams including the Padres, Yankees, Angels, Blue Jays, Twins and Indians, capturing his only world series title in 1992 with Toronto. Winfield's numerous accolades included 12 All-Star game appearances, 7 Gold Glove Awards, 6 Silver Slugger Awards, the 1994 Roberto Clemente Award, and his number 31 being retired by the San Diego Padres. His final campaign in San Diego would be 1980, with the elite right-fielder choosing to enter baseball's free-agency draft after the conclusion of the 1980 season. New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner would sign Winfield to a 10-year $23 million contract in December 1980, making Winfield the highest paid baseball player at that point in time. As a vivid reminder of Winfield's final season for the Padres, presented here is an imposing Adirondack DW20 model bat that has been directly affiliated with the 1980 season.

Graded a solid PSA GU 8.5, this colossal piece of lumber turns back the clock to an era when Winfield would unleash his mighty swing as if he was holding a toothpick in his hands as opposed to a 35+ inch baseball bat. We can clearly recall Winfield's 6'6" 220 lb. monstrous frame as he stepped into the batter's box and twirled his bat several times before the pitch, and this grand offering was truly one of those bats he utilized in his final campaign with the Padres. Assessed an imposing "Game-Used 8.5" bat by PSA's prestigious bat expert John Taube, the accompanying PSA LOA's provide the following critical data including Manufacturer (302 Adirondack); Model Number (DW20); Labeling Period (1980); Length (35.5 Inches); Weight (35 Ounces); Wood Type (Ash); and Finish (Brown). There is evidence of excellent use with a modest handle crack.

Portions of the right, left and back barrel exhibit white leather ball scuffs that are easily noted due to the bat's dark brown finish. Of utmost significance, the knob reveals the DW20 model number, a 067-order number and the year (0). Its excellent use is traced to booth the aforementioned white leather ball marks, handle crack and heavy coast of pine tar on the handle. The barrel includes DAVE WINFIELD's name in bold white block letters, accompanied by "BIG STICK" and "PERSONAL MODEL". A white ring is situated near the beginning portion of the handle, at the end of the brown covered surface, and the middle of the bat exhibits the classic "ADIRONDACK PRO RING" trademark in white block lettering. One of the popular game-used bats preserved by the Philadelphia Phillies "Hot-Pants Girl", its stands as a steadfast reminder of Dave Winfield's playing brilliance, with its strong PSA 8.5 assessment earning it a place in Cooperstown N.Y. alongside the player who utilized it in mighty fashion during the 1980 season! - Full PSA LOAs Included (PSA GU 8.5 - Certification #1B26984)/Consignor Letter of Provenance
