(LOT 572)
1934 World Wide Gum Co. #92 Lou Gehrig SGC 4 VG-EX

In 1934, the World-Wide Gum Co. of Montreal, Canada released a 96-card set similar to America's 1933/'34 Goudey Gum cards. Utilizing the exact same images from the 1933 Goudey (checklist #'s 1-48) and 1934 Goudey (checklist #'s 49-96) compilations, the two most prominent subjects are the #28 Babe Ruth and #92 Lou Gehrig. Regarding the Iron Horse #92 subject, his World-Wide Gum iconic portrait image was taken directly from the #37 Goudey Gum card, and presented here is an outstanding SGC 4 VG-EX World-Wide Gum #92 Gehrig. "Larrupin Lou" would justify the Canadian-based company's decision to include his card in their 1934 set by claiming the A.L.'s revered 1934 Triple Crown.

Indeed, the '34 campaign would see Gehrig lead the A.L. in virtually every vital batting statistic including average (.363), Home Runs (49), R.B.I.'s (166), OBP (.465), SLG (.706), OPS (1.172) and Total Bases (409). The Yankee Captain had now become the ""toast of the town" due to Babe Ruth's career winding down in New York, finally appreciated for his world-class batting feats. This SGC 4 memento boasts a spine-tingling array of sparkling attributes including brilliant facial hues, a relatively clean yellow background "EX+" corners and a verso eluding any obtrusive flaws. Interestingly enough, the brief Gehrig bio is written in "French-Canadian", and we can only assume the card fell short of a higher grade due to the iconic Gehrig image favoring the lower edge. Yet, its laundry list of aforementioned superlatives more than justify its current assessment, meriting a final resting place in any esteemed Iron Horse collection!
