(LOT 237)
1933 Goudey #22 Signed Harold "Pie" Traynor (PSA AUTHENTIC) – One of Only 4 PSA Encapsulated Copies!

One of the scarcest of all signed 1933 Goudey cards is "Pie" Traynor's #25 subject. In fact, even the heralded "Uncle Jimmy Collection" did not include a scripted Traynor. That said, we are proud to offer this extremely rare autographed '33 Goudey Traynor marvel, encapsulated "Authentic" by PSA and one of only four known examples! Until Mathews, B. Robinson, Schmidt, and Brett came along, Traynor was always considered MLB's greatest all-time third baseman.

Over 17 years in the Steel City, he posted a sensational .320 lifetime batting average, and was renowned for being the finest fielder of his time. Interestingly enough, he achieved his iconic "Pie" nickname as a child because he always asked for pie in the grocery store he frequently visited in Somerville, Massachusetts. The owner dubbed him "Pie Face", with that nickname later shortened to simply 'Pie." Although the offered card reveals a number of creases and a piece of light tape along the left edge, the significant central image and bold "Pie Traynor" script affixed across his period-style stockings are completely intact. A rarity to say the least, it conjures up vivid memories of how this star third sacker commanded his position far superior to anyone from his era!
