(LOT 688)
c.1926 Babe Ruth & Jack Dempsey Type 1 Christy Walsh Syndicate Photo - Measures Approx. 8" x 10" - PSA Type I Encapsulation

This extremely eclectic photo presents two of America's greatest sports personalities in the 1920's, the incomparable Babe Ruth and boxing champion Jack Dempsey. Both icons stand half-naked with their arms outstretched as Ruth positions himself directly behind the heavyweight champion, and you can only see Ruth's
head alongside the head of Jack Dempsey. This literal "two-headed monster" combo paved the way for American sports throughout the 1920's, with Ruth blasting his way to baseball immortality via his record setting home runs and Dempsey retaining the heavyweight title from 1919 thru 1926.

Voted a top ten all-time boxer by Ring magazine, Dempsey will forever be renowned for the "Long-Count" 1927 boxing match in his re-match versus new heavyweight champion Gene Tunney. After knocking down Tunney in the 7th round, Dempsey failed to go to his neutral corner for roughly 5 second, enabling Tunney to get up off the canvas after an assumed 14-second time-span. Tunney went on to win the fight and retain his title, with Dempsey's final opportunity to regain the heavyweight championship slipping by the wayside. Meanwhile, in 1926, the Bambino's batting exploits would lead the Yankees to the American League pennant, and while they would lose a title contested World Series to the Cardinals, they would redeem themselves in 1927 by "cake-walking" to a World Championship.

The photo itself is in magnificent condition, revealing crystal-clear clarity and near-perfect centering between bright white borders. No obtrusive blemishes are evident, and the critical "Copyright 1926 Christy Walsh Syndicate" violet stamp is situated along the lower border. A super neat offering, it captures both Ruth and Dempsey in a literally "unique-like" pose at the height of their dominance for their respective crafts!
