(LOT 679)
1939 All-Star Game Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx & Left Gomez Type I Associated Press Photo – Measures Approx. 7" x 10" – PSA Type I Encapsulation

The 1939 Mid-Summer classic was held on July 11, 1939 at Yankee Stadium, only one week after the immortal "Iron Horse" delivered his "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Erath" speech likewise before a packed house at Yankee Stadium. Although Gehrig would never see the playing field again in lieu of his tragic ALS disease, he was chosen as the A.L.'s honorary captain for the 1939 All-Star game won by the American League by a 3-1 score. This sensational Type 1 offering portrays Gehrig in the dugout with fellow Cooperstown inductees Jimmie Foxx and teammate Lefty Gomez.

The crystal clear 7" x 10" image depicts Gehrig pointing out towards the field as Gomez and Foxx intently look on. Ironically, it is Gehrig who clearly emanates the super eye pleasing smile, especially considering he surely knows his life will now be severely shortened by the deadly ALS disease. The verso reveals a detailed credit stamp that outlines the event, and sad to say, less than two years later, the iconic "Iron Horse" would ultimately succumb to this catastrophic illness, leaving an empty space within the hearts of Gehrig's seemingly infinite fan base!
