(LOT 671)
1932 Babe Ruth All-American Team w/Dickey, Lazzeri & Warneke – International Newsreel Type 1 Photo – Measures Approx. 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" - PSA Type 1 Encapsulation

This super obscure 6-1/2" x 8-1/2" image taken on October 2, 1932 portrays Bill Dickey, Tony Lazzeri and Lon Warneke with Babe Ruth, all selected members of the "Babe's" ultra-popular All-American Baseball Team. Even more interesting is that this classic image was taken the day the Yankees would sweep the Chicago Cubs in Game#4 of the 1932 World Series, crushing the Cubbies by a 13-6 score. It was only a day earlier that Ruth and Gehrig would both clout two round-trippers in their game#3 victory, with Ruth's second homer his historic "Called-Shot" blast off of the Cubs centerfield scoreboard off of twirler Charlie Root. Before game#4, Ruth, Dickey, Lazzeri and Chicago's right-handed hurler Lon Warneke would put on their All-American team sweaters to pose for this eclectic image, directly before the Bronx Bombers would end the Cubs season.

The All-American Baseball Team concept can be traced back to legendary sports agent Christy Walsh who was responsible for creating an "All-American Baseball Board". His most notable client, George Herman Ruth, was chosen as its Chairman, whereby the finest baseball players were chosen for Ruth's "All-American Team" and awarded certificates for their playing excellence. The photo itself reflects superb contrast and fine clarity, with the aforementioned stars exhibiting both their All-American sweaters and certificates, standing directly in front of the Wrigley Field stands that include the typical Fall Classic red, white and blue bunting. The surface is relatively clean, save a small area of diminutive foxing directly above the lower border and some negligible paper rippling near the upper region. The verso includes the International Newsreel credit stamp as well as a critical 10-2-32 caption detailing the event. A splendid and most eclectic Babe Ruth offering, it transcends us back to the time when the "Sultan of Swat" claimed his final World Series title, with his "Called Shot" homer still residing as one of the most exalted moments in baseball history!
