c.1927 – "Babe Ruth Attempts to Sign a Snowball" Type 1 Photo - Measures Approx. 8" x 10" - PSA Type I Encapsulation
It was one of Ruth's closest friends, Waite Hoyt, who steadfastly claimed that he saw the "Sultan of Swat" sign over 10,000 baseballs! Indeed, no pre-WWII baseball player scripted more horsehide spheres than the Bambino, for Ruth simply could not refuse to sign a ball for any of his adoring fan base. With that in mind, presented here just happens to be one of the extreme "oddities" in photo collecting as Babe Ruth actually appears to be signing a SNOWBALL with a fountain pen! While we are sure the Babe ultimately feel short of this virtually impossible task, the notion of even attempting to scrip a snowball could only fall into the lap of the incomparable Ruth.
Taken in the 1927 era, the verso includes a pencil notation that reads: "The first snowfall in Portland in 2 years gave Babe Ruth something new to autograph", and you can literally feel Ruth's unparalleled sense of humor as he emulates a cheerful smile as he attempts to complete this rather obscure task. Measuring approximately 8" x 10", the image itself is in outstanding condition, portraying a rather dark contrast and eluding the typical serious flaws that plague most 92-year old photos. A sensational candid Ruth illustration, it conjures up memories of how this baseball immortal "left no stone unturned" with regard to autographing virtually any artifact!
