(LOT 643)
c.1930's Lou Gehrig Classic Batting Swing – PSA Type I APEX Photograph Co. – Measures Approx. 5" x 7" – PSA Type 1 Encapsulation

This magnificent Lou Gehrig batting photo portrays the "Iron Horse" walloping a baseball into the furthest confines of an opposing team's stadium as he dons his classic New York road uniform. Obviously taken during a pre-game batting practice session, this sensational 5" x 7" illustration reflects near-perfect photography with regard to Gehrig's mighty swing. Years later, legendary hitting coach Charlie Lau would preach about the significance of left-handed hitters releasing the right hand during the end of their swing, which is exactly what the Iron Horse has done in this seemingly timeless photo. Emanating crystal-clear clarity and fine contrast, the relatively well-centered image borders on "breathtaking", with its outstanding overall aesthetics far surpassing the insignificant stray wrinkles that are barely visible to the naked eye.

Its flipside reveals the critical "APEX PHOTOGRAPH COMPANY" credit stamp as well as a few "Lou Gehrig" and "New York" ink notations. While Gehrig's extensive list of batting accomplishments stands at a world-class level, his iconic legacy is still linked to his unfathomable 2,130 consecutive game streak that came to an abrupt end in 1939 via the incurable ALS disease that claimed his life in 1941. It was that illness that eventually led to his incomparable "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech on July 4, 1939 that still resides as baseball's "Gettysburg Address". Simply stated, Gehrig's immortal stature is destined to outlast time, substantiating why any of his awe-inspiring collectibles such as this grand batting photo are among the most revered collectibles in our illustrious hobby!
