c.1913 Jim Thorpe Batting Type I Photo – Underwood & Underwood – Measures Approx. 6" x 8-1/2" – PSA Type 1 Encapsulation

This stellar Jim Thorpe original portrait photo was taken by the renowned Underwood & Underwood news service and portrays the immortal 20th century star donning his period-style N.Y. Giants sweater and uniform. Issued in spring training of 1913, Thorpe is portrayed in a superb bunting position, with the image revealing fine clarity and contrast. Obvious edge trimming does not negate the sparkling central pose, and the only noteworthy blemishes are a series of ultra-thin horizontal print lines running across the center of the illustration. One of the greatest all-around athletes ever, the immortal Jim Thorpe not only dominated various Olympic events including winning gold medals in the 1912 pentathlon and decathlon events as well as playing professional baseball and football during the early 1910's.

His storied amateur career at Carlisle Indian School included two amazing All-American seasons in 1911 and 1912, with Thorpe leading Carlisle to the National Championship in 1912. His remaining baseball batting photos are few and far between, with this approximate 6" x 8-1/2" gem's final superlative being a caption detailing the photo's pedigree including the renowned Underwood & Underwood name. One of Thorpe's most captivating images, it turns back the clock to the decade when this remarkable athlete would test the waters in both professional baseball and football, as well as earning iconic stature via his unfathomable performance in the 1912 Olympics!
