(LOT 98)
1959 Sandy Koufax Original Type 1 Wide World Photo - Measures Approx. 7" x 9" - PSA Type 1 LOA

Still searching for the command of his pitches that would eventually place him as baseball's finest hurler of the 1960's, this imposing Koufax image offering portrays the fire-balling southpaw pitching against the Chicago Cubs on September 6, 1959 at the L.A. Coliseum. Although Koufax would shut out the Cubs for 9 stellar innings while striking out 10 batters (walking 7), unfortunately for the future left-handed Cooperstown Inductee, his Dodger teammates would not be able to push across a single run, with the game going to extra innings.

Koufax took the rubber in the 10th inning and with one out and two men on base, legendary slugger Ernie Banks crushed one of Koufax's pitches into the center field seats for a 3-run homer that would best Sandy by a 3-0 score. A classic Koufax pitching image for sure, he is about to fire one of his seemingly "speed of light" like fastballs, with some upper border diminutive scratches and right border notations the only flaws worthy of mention. Breathtaking clarity/contrast, no obtrusive flaws, fine centering and the verso's caption that mentions the September 6, 1959 game against Chicago are the final compliments to one of the few pre-1960 Sandy Koufax pitching photos in circulation! - LOA – PSA/DNA Type I
