(LOT 89)
1936 Lou Gehrig Photo – "Gehrig Receives a Scroll from Mayor LaGuardia for playing in 1,800 Consecutive Games" - PSA Type I Original Wide World Photo – Measures Approx. 7" x 9-1/4" – Full PSA Type 1 LOA

Three years before the "Iron Horse" would be stricken with his legendary ALS disease (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) that would end his consecutive game streak at 2,130 games; New York City Mayor LaGuardia would present him with a scroll in September 1936 at Yankee Stadium commending him for playing in his 1,800th consecutive game. This remarkable PSA Type I photo measuring approximately 7" x 9-1/4" depicts that renowned event as Gehrig receives his prize from Mayor LaGuardia; flanked by his teammates including the Yankee Clipper Joe DiMaggio and esteemed manager Joe McCarthy. Incredibly, this masterpiece reveals no major creasing and/or surface blemishes and includes a significant 9/19/36 caption detailing the nuances of this spectacular image.

Ironically, this scroll was presented to Gehrig before a game with the Washington Senators, the same team the Yankees would face on July 4, 1939 when Gehrig delivered his iconic "Luckiest Man on The Face Of The Earth" farewell speech at Yankee Stadium that will forever reside as our National Pastime's "Gettysburg Address". Gehrig would tragically succumb to the ALS illness only two years later on June 2, 1941 at the tender age of 37, with his hallowed name standing as the ultimate embodiment of courage that left an indelible mark on our National Pastime. An historical reminder of the "Iron Horse's" unparalleled bravery, it effectively "turns back the clock" to a point in time when Gehrig dominated the game at a superior level reserved for only a handful of baseball's all-time immortals! – Full PSA/DNA Type I LOA
