(LOT 35)
1910 E98 "Black Swamp" Roger Bresnahan - Red Background (PSA NM 7) – Only 2 Graded Higher!

Any E98 subject from the amazing 2012 "Black Swamp Find" is considered hobby royalty with this scintillating PSA 7 Roger Bresnahan marvel one of the HOF catcher's finest issues. Joined by only twelve other examples at this near-mint tier, only a paltry 2 specimens have been graded higher! While a formidable hitter and stellar defensive catcher, Hall of Famer Roger Bresnahan's his most notable contributions to our National Pastime were the protective devices he created for batting and catching after he was hospitalized by a 1905 bean-ball.

He is largely credited for the first batter's helmet, protective catcher's shin guards and provided significant input in escalating the technology for the catcher's mask. An innovator to say the least, his superb batting representation on this near mint offering is well projected via the rich red setting. Immaculate-like surfaces, sharp corners and superior registration all support the technical assessment, with a partly skewed image (favoring he left edge) preventing a higher grade. Bested by only 2 other examples, this E98 Black Swamp prize is the perfect testament for one of Cooperstown's finest catchers!
